Chief factors in Polish groups

چکیده

Abstract In finite group theory, chief factors play an important and well-understood role in the structure theory. We here develop a theory of for Polish groups. development this we prove version Schreier refinement theorem. also trichotomy topologically characteristically simple The requires two independently interesting lines study. First consider injective, continuous homomorphisms with dense normal image. show such maps admit canonical factorisation via semidirect product, as consequence, these preserve topological simplicity up to abelian error. then define generalisations direct products use isolate notion semisimplicity

Borel Actions of Polish Groups

We show that a Borel action of a Polish group on a standard Borel space is Borel isomorphic to a continuous action of the group on a Polish space, and we apply this result to three aspects of the theory of Borel actions of Polish groups: universal actions, invariant probability measures, and the Topological Vaught Conjecture. We establish the existence of universal actions for any given Polish ...

Borel Subgroups of Polish Groups

We study three classes of subgroups of Polish groups: Borel subgroups, Polishable subgroups, and maximal divisible subgroups. The membership of a subgroup in each of these classes allows one to assign to it a rank, that is, a countable ordinal, measuring in a natural way complexity of the subgroup. We prove theorems comparing these three ranks and construct subgroups with prescribed ranks. In p...

Universal Subgroups of Polish Groups

Given a class C of subgroups of a topological group G, we say that a subgroup H ∈ C is a universal C subgroup of G if every subgroup K ∈ C is a continuous homomorphic pre-image of H. Such subgroups may be regarded as complete members of C with respect to a natural pre-order on the set of subgroups of G. We show that for any locally compact Polish group G, the countable power G has a universal K...

Recognizing PSL(2, p) in the non-Frattini chief factors of finite groups

Given a finite group G, let PG(s) be the probability that s randomly chosen elements generate G, and let H be a finite group with PG(s) = PH(s). We show that if the nonabelian composition factors of G and H are PSL(2, p) for some non-Mersenne prime p ≥ 5, then G and H have the same non-Frattini chief factors. Strong measure zero sets in Polish groups∗

In the context of arbitrary Polish groups, we investigate the Galvin– Mycielski–Solovay characterization of strong measure zero sets as those sets for which a meager collection of right translates cannot cover the
